Gender, according to me for the purpose of this article is the projected masculinity or feminity of a person. A person’s gender is complex, encompassing countless characteristics of appearance, speech, movement and many more other factors. It is not just limited to biological sex. Gender refers to a social construction rather than a biological condition regarding culture-bound conventions, roles and behaviors for men and women, relationship between them. It is a characteristic which we learn in our society.
I think gender is totally dependent on the culture and society where we live. I am from
India. There is a lot of difference in culture of India and
USA. When we were talking in the class about the gender and roles of gender in the society, I was thinking about that difference of culture all the time .In our family, my mom is a house-wife and the only source of income is my father .My mom use to work before they got married but she have to stop working after just to take care of the house and kids, just because of the culture and society. I have a younger sister, she is 19 years old and she had never wear jeans in her entire life just because of the family tradition, but a boy can wear jeans, go out with friends. Female have to be dependent on male in that type of culture.
In many other cases, the elements of convention or tradition seem to play a dominant role in deciding which occupations fit in with which gender roles. In the
United States, physicians have traditionally been men, and the few people who defied that expectation received a special job description: “woman doctor”. Similarly, there are special terms like “male nurse”, “woman lawyer”, “lady barber”, “male secretary,” etc. Also, throughout history, some jobs that have been typically male or female have switched genders.
Masculinity and feminity are the two important factors of gender. Feminity and musculinity can be supported by both men and women. Women have to be strong at a work place and have to be caring, emotional and soft to build a relationship with men. Sometime men have to do something which shows feminity in nature. According to me, the most influential source of our gender roles comes from our own family. We see our mothers be women, and we see our fathers enact maleness.
