Ads out of control

Here’s a photo of downtown Hong Kong. I’m not sure you could fit any more ads in!

Here’s Tokyo:

And Times Square in good old NYC:

  1. um….I don’t get it.
They’re all tourist areas with eager, you guessed it, tourists looking to spend money and have a good time. The bright lights and hustle and bustle of the street life add to the excitement. These images are what i would want to see if i was on vacation. Let’s me know where to shop and waste my money.
    Great consumer fun.

  2. What’s “to get”?
You’re right, the owners of the ads are hoping that tourists with plenty of cash to spend will be inspired to spend some there. And it does add to the excitment of the area in a certain way.
I was hoping for opinions….not putting one out.
But I will, if that’s what you’re looking for:
The whole area in each of the photos looks like a computer screen immoblized by an attack of pop-up ads. I’d like to agree with you and say that they are directing people like myself to places I’d like to shop, but to be honest I can’t–because I’m not sure if this entrance in Times Square leads to Applebees, Cinnabon, HMV, the Hilton, Starbucks, Ruby’s, California Pizza Kitchen, the movies or something else. And I don’t even know what HMV is. Is there ever a point where a place becomes so saturated with advertisement that it begins to lose its effectiveness as an ad, and therefore counteract its intended purpose? Think of products like pop-blockers, TiVo, or satellite radio whose whole existence was created to offer people an escape from an evironment like this. So, I’d agree with you that its fun and exciting to visit Times Square once or twice, but (personally) I wouldn’t like to live amidst that. If ads like that were in my hometown, I’d be packing this weekend.

  3. I’ve been to Time Square in New York and it looked very similar to the picture. The ads were just as overdone. I didn’t really pay attention to them at the time, but thinking back on it now, it was pretty crazy. Advertisers must spend a lot a money advertising in Time Square, but when you think about it, it makes sense because they are so many tourists that pay attention to the ads that I don’t doubt that a pretty penny is mads off of them.

  4. The image of Time Square in particular was not odd in any way to me. I believe it depends on the area in which the ads are in. People like us in Michigan find it different and maybe a bit too much because where we live it is not something that we see everyday. As for people who live In New York or people who are used to seing things like that find it normal, but too us it is somewhat out of the norm.
