What do you see?

Theodore Kelley

If there’s one thing people love to do, that is look through a magazine. Magazines and newspapers are one of the few things that will take your mind away from any problem you’re going through. Although magazines and newspapers are used to publicize the latest gossip and news, several companies use it to advertise their merchandise. Large businesses such as Newport pleasure and Camel cigarettes, Budweiser beer, Organic Root hair products, clothes, food, Kay jeweler’s jewelry, and several other well-known companies advertise their product in a way that you would not know what they’re selling.

Budweiser beer for example are always’ remembered for their advertising tactics. Most of the time there is a woman in a swimsuit holding a beer lying down on the beach with a sunset. Coming from a man, a woman in a swimsuit will grab anybody’s attention instantly. Camel cigarettes use an animal as their mascot, which would appeal more to children. Newport Pleasure cigarettes usually have a picture with a party scene in the background. They make it seem cool to smoke cigarettes. Along with the ‘cool’ image are Cool cigarettes. Cool cigarettes usually have pictures of people having a good time as well.

Advertising is all about the sale, not the servicing of their consumers. Newport Pleasure cigarette companies are not concerned with the consequences or risk their consumers are taking. The only thing that matters to them is money. They know that if they tell the truth about the product their selling, they wouldn’t get any sales. By taking a picture of people having a good time at a party as a form of advertising they would have a higher sales rate. It all work around supply and demand. The ad that I viewed is just like the one I discussed. There are two men and two women portrayed as a band on a stage. They look as if they are having the best time of their lives. If I were just to see this picture I would think they were promoting some type of concert but this is really a cigarette promotion.

Young adults between the ages of eighteen and twenty-five watch a lot of television also. When you see your favorite celebrity on TV. Smoking a cigarette or drinking an alcoholic beverage that influences you to try these things out. Television, magazines, newspaper and day-to-day task play huge roles into the advertising of these products. It’s all a big business and everyone in the world is the employee.

  1. OK, nice job. One of the things I found interesting about this blog was that you point out that companies do not operate to serve people. They operate to make money. I think the cigarette ad is a great example of this. Cigarette companies are all too well aware that cigarettes are bad for people, yet they continue to try to capitalize on that.

  2. This is a cool post. Your definitely right in that most ads dont sell the truth behind the product, but thats what I think makes ads so successful.

  4. I really liked your last sentence “It’s all a big business and everyone in the world is the employee.” I never thought about it like that. Nice Job!

  5. that last comment caught my eye as well. “it’s all a big business and everyone in the world is the employee” or better yet “Advertising is the pimp and the world is the hoe” Big Companies brainwash us into giving them our money. That is their goal to take and take and take until someone blows the whistle and they settle out of court, make a few speaches and apologize and lie about how they will improve then they are right back to what they were doing before the whistle was blown.
just like mcdonalds. salads and water weren’t sold in mcdonalds until Supersize me came along, but the food is still dangerous.
